Client: Dominion Housing Group/University of Bristol
Duration: 2003 – 2005
Located on the site of the old University Sports Department, Woodland Court provides 200 study bedrooms for the University of Bristol. The rooms are arranged in flats for up to six students, each with communal kitchen and dining area. Most are in new blocks around paved courtyards; and the rest in the adjacent C19th refurbished Woodland House.
The scale and massing of the new accommodation was determined by the grain of the surrounding Victorian villas and terraces, with the buildings designed to be both sympathetic to their context whilst retaining their own integrity. Contemporary in appearance, they use coloured insulated render; with patinated copper, zinc and western red cedar to articulate the wall and roof elements.
The striking stainless steel courtyard gate is by the artist John Packer.
