Henbury Secondary School, Bristol

Client: HBG Construction & Bristol City Council (PFI)
Value: £14m
Duration: 2004 – 2006

Henbury School, for up to 945 pupils, replaced the previous 1960’s school. Together with Monks Park it is one of two new secondary schools designed by AFA as part of the first wave of the major rebuilding of Bristol’s schools.

Its hub is a double height space, from which a main ‘street’ & departmental wings are directly accessible – providing an efficient and legible organisation. The wings form sheltered courtyards for outside activities & recreation. The building is designed to use minimal energy by utilising natural ventilation, thermal mass and good natural light as far as possible.

The Civic Space on the public frontage and the separate Leisure Centre are both for use by the school and the community.
