Wapping Wharf, Bristol

Client: Umberslade and Muse Developments

Located on the south side of Bristol’s historic harbour on previously derelict land behind the new M Shed, the entire area will be transformed into a lively community of up to 625 new homes, individual shops, offices, cafes and restaurants.

Phase 1 of the 3 stage project involves 194 apartments, including 24 affordable homes together with retail and leisure space at the western end of the site between the Floating Harbour and Avon New Cut.

In developing the detailed design of Plots A and C,  Alec French have considered the aspirations for the Wapping Wharf area, the history of the site and its context to ensure the project has visual consistency which is relevant to the Council’s Conservation Area Character Appraisal.

A tough gritty dockside character is envisaged in the architectural details of the building, in the balance of solid and void and choice of materials. The retention of existing cobbles and re-use in the Public Realm will further enhance this character.

Phase 1 is complete and Phase 2 is due to commence in 2017.
